The "Activity" within a Contact record gives you a path and a timeline of how that Contact came into your system. You won't typically use this, but we track it to keep tabs on a variety of performance statistics behind the scenes.
From Conversations, you can easily see a Contact's highlights (like name, phone, and email) as well as click to go directly to their full contact record.
